The puzzle revolves around the movie Space Jam. Instead of basketball, we use football. Let’s say football-playing Martians land on earth, blow things up Independence Day–style, then challenge us to an ultimate match for control of the universe. And let’s say you have the access to the teleport machine from Star Trek, allowing you to teleport any current footballer and grab them to play with the Earth team, transport them to the training camp, then hold practices for few weeks before the ultimate match. Again, we have to prevail or planet Earth as we know it ends. Which eleven players would you pick?
If you learned anything from how Spain controls the world from 2008 to 2012, I hope and pray that it’s this: instead of picking the greatest players, you should pick eleven starters who complement each other in the best possible way … right? You want a football team, not a circus. A group of players that understand each other. A pecking order of personalities/talents that no rogue player would dare challenge. A crunch-time unit that includes one vocal leader (Casillas), one leader by example (Iniesta) and one unquestioned alpha dog (Xavi). Support players who will accept their roles and not care about fame/fortunes. We also consider team flexibility with playing styles and physical attributes/athleticism.
(Think of Escape to Victory-style scenario, where the hero face the baddies in a XI-aside game)
Special rules:
1. At least one Asian/African player on the starting XI, so we could have support from Africans and Asians. (Sixty percent of Earthlings are Asians, and 16% are Africans)
2. No more than three players are older than 30 years old. (Other than the GK)
3. No more than two players have “Low” defensive work-rate. The team simply can’t afford players that won’t play D.
4. At least three players (other than the GK) must have “Tall” physique. At least one of them is the central defender. We need tall player for corners/indirect free-kicks.
5. No more than three “Short” players.
6. At least one of the central defenders must have “Medium” or “High” defensive work-rate. No more than one central defender has “High” offensive work-rate. A real team won’t survive playing two liberos/sweepers.
7. At least three players have “High” offensive work-rate. We can’t play for a draw.
8. Acrobatic GK tends to make mistakes in unexpected situations, use them with cautions.
That said, our Earth XI, ideally, would care only about winning and meshing as a team.
