Doing a little catching up lately about recent seasons in all the South American leagues. I saw a table with the populations of SA and some things stuck out to me:
- Colombia has more people than Argentina and is the 2nd biggest. Wonder why they haven't been more of a force in SA football.
Early to mid 90s they had that nice team that won in Buenos Aires 5-0 in WCQ and was a darkhorse to win WC '94. But they didn't really build on that though they did win CA when they hosted it a few years later.
But I guess they don't have the infrastructure of Argentina or population of Brazil to compete at their level. But then again I don't know how Uruguay has done it all along.
- Venezuela has the 4th biggest population. I know baseball is their top sport but football is still popular to play and wonder why they have been so bad for so long. Maybe it doesn't matter when your country is the best at beauty contests.
- Uruguay is tiny. Already knew they had a small population but didn't realize it was the smallest of them all (not counting the countries that politically are not part of SA). They inexplicably have won the most Copa Americas. Two WCs ain't bad either!
Rank Country Population
1 Brazil 195,632,000
2 Colombia 47,130,000
3 Argentina 41,350,000
4 Peru 30,476,000
5 Venezuela 29,760,000
6 Chile 16,841,000
7 Ecuador 15,779,000
8 Bolivia 10,517,000
9 Paraguay 6,849,000
10 Uruguay 3,297,000
Why is Venezuela so bad at football and Uruguay so good?
